Feb. 4, 1961. UNC's Larry Brown and Duke star Art Heyman get into a fight after Brown is fouled hard by Heyman while driving for a lay-up. Duke wins 81-77, but loses Heyman to a suspension for fighting. Many credit this game as starting the "heat" in the rivalry.

The Duke University Archives preserves 16mm film and videotape created by the coaching staffs of the Duke football and men's basketball programs. This site contains descriptions of the film and videotape shot, whether an access copy exists, and in some cases, the physical condition of the original film. Football films and video cover the period of 1935 to 1994 and Men's Basketball film covers the period of 1947 to 1996. It is important to note that the films document the play of the teams and were created as tools for study and training, not for broadcast. Some films were cut and spliced, so the footage may not show the complete game or be in the order the game was played. Also not every game was filmed and there are numerous gaps in the coverage of the film. For information on how to view or request a copy of a film, please see http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/dsf

  • The fight guaranteed all UNC-Duke games would be on TV from then on, which they hadn't been up to that point. TV had a lot to do with building up the rivalry, the ratings were huge for that time and the network affiliates in NC pre-empted national programming to show Duke-UNC (which they still do 50 years later).

The football game was a much bigger event until the mid 60s when both basketball teams were national powers at the same time, and have pretty much stayed that way ever since.

  • wow !!! and todays cameron crazies think they are intimidating !!!! wow!!!
