Milling the first part on the Tormach PCNC 1100! Making the first chips is always exciting. I'm using a 2-flute, 1/4" HSS end mill at 4,000 RPM and 30 IPM on a block of 6061 Aluminum and a 38MM face mill at 1,000 RPM and 30 IPM.

  • Using mach3? not the tormach software?

  • @fastedos1969 Tormach uses Mach3.

  • @fastedos1969 I think you are confused - Tormach uses Mach3 (well, I think they now also support EMC, but I do not believe it is commonly used)

  • Wow, congrats to a nicely finished installation.

If you are wondering what coolant I use? Blasers Swisslube is my best choice and also a Hangsterfers. I also have a gallon of Cimcool 1070.

Looks like you made good finish there. I usually shoot for 125 finish. Also nice to see the facemill. The Tormach's are very powerful, so yeah, the chips do fly. I think that in aluminum, especially 6061, I would use a rougher to blast out the material leaving just a teeny bit for cleanup.

  • @gbowne1 What do you mean by you shoot for a 125 finish?

  • @fastedos1969 Where are the parallels?

  • @saunixcomp @saunixcomp In my machining environment I have very important surface finish specifications to meet, how ever you look at them they can be expressed as, 125Ra, 125RMS, 125 Microinch. I hope you have been enjoying your mill, like the first month when I got my fist mill. The RMS (Root Mean Square) is measured per DIN4762/ANSI B46-1. On most surface finish gage settings it is also known as Rq, which according to my info at hand is about 25% greater than Ra.

  • what HHS tool are you using that you can run them that fast.

  • I think this first part deserves to be framed! Congrats on your first cut and your new machine! You've done a great job on documenting and sharing its arrival and setup. I think what your doing is great for you and Tormach!

  • @saunixcomp I do a lot of work that requires a specific surface finish measurement, I should have been more specific, meaning 125 Ra.
