From Bohannon's 1980 LP "Music In The Air". There's so much that can be said about Bohannon. So much that *should* be said. I feel he's one of those artists that didn't get the recognition they deserved. For one; he is an underrated musical genius.. He is a master drummer, percussionist, composer and arranger who made innovative poly-rhythmic dance -funk like no one had thought of before him (or managed to copy after). His rather thin voice and simple lyrics were an extra ingenious spice in the groove-stew of rhythm and funk. Every instrument, every musician in the band fit the heavy and hypnotic grooves just right. He assembled a hell of a band: Leroy Emmanuel on guitar, Ted Waterhouse on bass, Mose Davis and Rod Lumpkin on keyboards, Lorenzo Brown on percussion and Elizabeth Lands on vocals.
Bohannon's legacy goes back to the 1960's, playing drums for Stevie Wonder for several years, and being one of Berry Gordy and Motown's most reliable and creative band leaders, then venturing out as an artist in the 70's, beginning with "Stop and Go" in 1973. A string of great records on Dakar/Brunswick followed and after a switch to Mercury, Bohannon received his biggest hit with "Let's Start The Dance" in 1978. It features the inimitable and much-sampled vocals by Carolyn Crawford, whom Bohannon also produced two solo albums for in the seventies. Bohannon is still active in the business, although not as an artist. You can find him on MySpace.
