Most horses wait for apples to fall. A few are more proactive. Colonial Spanish / Appaloosa crosses Skyy and Tiz have their own methods, even after the easy-to-pick apples are gone.

(2011 update - several years later, and the rest of the herd *still* hasn't caught on. And they still leave all the pinata-opening work to these two, though the rest do get to share in those spoils.)
Horses are known to be extreeeemely smart, and once they learn something, it NEVER forgets it.

Better warn them though that too many apples can cause horsey colly-wobbles.
I had a Welsh pony when I was a kid used to wait for the windfalls to ferment-and then get drunk on them.
Clever beasts aint they.
