Most horses wait for apples to fall. A few are more proactive. Colonial Spanish / Appaloosa crosses Skyy and Tiz have their own methods, even after the easy-to-pick apples are gone.

See http://www.flickr.com/photos/banjocat/sets/72157594235834450 for photos.

(2011 update - several years later, and the rest of the herd *still* hasn't caught on. And they still leave all the pinata-opening work to these two, though the rest do get to share in those spoils.)

  • Horses are known to be extreeeemely smart, and once they learn something, it NEVER forgets it.

  • apple is just one bite for a horse !!

  • Wow, that's smart! :D

  • That's great. I loved it!!

  • ha ha that is so cute!!

  • Better warn them though that too many apples can cause horsey colly-wobbles.

I had a Welsh pony when I was a kid used to wait for the windfalls to ferment-and then get drunk on them.

    Clever beasts aint they.

  • smart horses!
