My wife wrote this for me on our 18th anniversary in May 2007. I guess you'd call it a love poem... kinda. ; )

It Must Be Love!
by Heather James

Every night for the past 18 years
We have gone to bed, cuddled spoon fashion
Lying on our right sides, your left arm around my waist.
And every night for the past 18 years,
After one has said "Sweet dreams" and the other replied "You too"
I have lain there and hoped that maybe, just maybe
Tonight would be the night.
This time, I would be the one to fall asleep first.

I coach myself: slow down your heartbeat, your breathing, your thoughts
And I start to feel it, that delicious sensation of falling asleep
And then within two minutes of that last "Sweet dreams" I hear it.
The first snore.

Oh, they start off quietly; gentle, deep breaths
That gradually deepen and become less gentle
Until it's like a buzz saw running next to my left ear.
On your best nights (my worst)
Your snores actually make the bedsprings vibrate
So I hear you in stereo: live in my left ear
Muted through the pillow in my right.

I try to ignore it. To convince myself that I can still fall asleep
That the noise will gradually slacken, that I will still get plenty of sleep
Before the alarm goes off at SIX A.M.
And it feels so nice, to have you pressed against my back,
Your arm around my waist.

And if I do wake you up and make you roll over,
I'll need to have a death grip on the blankets
Or end up lying naked in the cold.
(WHY do you grab the blankets when you roll??)
And once you do roll over, there will be that empty gap between us
Filled with cold air where once there was warmth
And I'll have to give the blankets a tug, so they hang between us
And fill that void, and warm my back.

So I remind myself that there will come a time
(In the very, very distant future, of course)
When the warmth of your body pressed against mine
Will only be a wistful memory
A time when I would give anything to hear -- GERALD !!
Mmph? Roll over, Cutie. Oh -- was I snoring? (!!!!!)
And most nights, that's all it takes. Cutie rolls over
Taking the blankets with you until they're taught against my fist
And I roll a bit in the opposite direction, pulling the blankets out of your loose grasp
So they hang between us and fill that void, and warm my back.
And eventually, I drift off.

But then there are the nights when I call your name,
And your arm around my waist tightens as you give me a subconscious hug.
Your snoring stops -- momentarily -- then regains momentum.
Those nights, I have to grasp your left wrist,
Lift your arm up, and push it backwards to start you on your way
And you roll over onto your right side, and your snoring starts again
...Away from my ear.

But then there are the nights when I grip your left wrist,
Lift your arm, push it backwards to start you on your way,
And your roll over...onto your back.
At which point, the snoring gets impossibly louder.
And I have to -- gently -- nudge you with my elbow or foot
And say: Honey, you're on your back. Roll over please.
And you do, and finally I am able to sleep.

I composed this poem in bed the other night
At times giggling to myself so much that your snoring actually slowed down
Which made me giggle more
I probably forgot how I meant to word the best parts of this poem
And forgot stuff I wanted to say
I should have gotten up to write it down
But I was so comfortable, with your body pressed up against my back,
Your left arm around my waist,
I didn't want to move.
Besides, it was Friday night. I could always sleep in
The next morning.

  • I'm performing this poem in class tomorrow for my Performance Studies final! hahahah. We get to pick any topic and I wanted to do it on a funny love poem and I think this will be hilarious. I'm gonna wear a snuggie and sit in a pretend bed and try really hard to talk like her.

  • Sarah, my wife would be honoured if you perform this poem. She reads it at our Coffee House every year on our anniversary, gets huge laughs from the audience, lots of wives nudging their husbands - and sometimes vice versa!! Almost everyone can relate to this. Have fun with it!
