Dame Kiri Te Kanawa sings "Voyages" from the album "Voyages".

Composers: Don McGlashan & Wayne Laird

Featuring Kiri Te Kanawa, Howard Morrison and Expo Maori Entertainers Music for the New Zealand Pavilion at Expo 1992.

The music represents the past 'voyages' of Polynesians and Europeans to New Zealand, and the present 'voyage' of identity as a multicultural Pacific nation. The Maori texts are traditional canoeing chants, adapted by Temuera Morrison. The English and Spanish words are from 'Landfall In Unknown Seas', written in 1942 by New Zealand's foremost poet, Allen Curnow, and used by kind permission of the author.

  • Absolutely stunning composition and performance!!!! Who wrote this?

  • Great to hear this after so many years. I actually played in the percussion section on this recording back in 1992 at Avalon Studios. I was studying at Wellington Conservatory of Music(now Massey Uni/NZSM)and my tutor asked if I wanted to record with Kiri Te Kanawa and the NZSO. I nervously said yes. This track was used at the '92 Seville Expo in the NZ Pavillion. Thanks for the posting.

  • WOW!!!

You really made this recording more exciting!

I do love this "crossover" number so much!

    THANK YOU!!!

  • @josejuanlopezruiz I'm glad it made a lasting impression on you. The NZSO recorded the music but the footage used at the NZ pavillion was of the Auckland Philharmonia. However the producers requested that my tutor and I be used in shooting the video footage. I had a blast. So, yes you probably did see me on the big screen at the NZ pavillion.

  • @jandals69 Then I'm sure that I've seen you, because I went into that pavilion more than ten times! It was fascinating.

Someday I'll go to New Zealand mostly because of the good impression that caused me.

  • Thank you so much for posting this video.

I've been looking for it a lot of times.

Do you know any only store that has it (I've been looking for it without success)?

    Thanks a lot!

  • Beautiful and inspiring. Thank you!

  • I actually worked at the NZ pavilion in Seville '92, and this was one of my favourite parts. It was played in "Theatre 2" to tell the story of all the peoples who came to NZ over the centuries. It was stirring stuff, and still sends a shiver down my spine!
