After a while, be it 500 or 1000 miles, of riding your bicycle your chain will start to wear off. The rivets inside the bushings between each link plate will slowly get thinner as the bushings rotate against them.
When the rivets get worn off, the position of the link plates change and they will no longer fit perfectly on the sprocket teeth. This, in turn, will wear off your sprocket's teeth and ruin it.
What can you do to avoid this:
1. Clean your chain on a regular basis. Dust, sand and other particles will wear off your chain.
2. Keep your chain always oiled. Use only oils that are made for lubricating chains. Do NOT use WD-40 as it will dry quick and leave your chain dry! In addition it will dissolve and good chain oil you might still have on your chain.
3. Measure the "streach" of you chain. How to do that is explained on this video.
I like this tool because it measures the roller wear too not just the distance between pins as measured with a ruler.

Thanks for this. .... Does this tool work for an 8-speed chain as well as the 9-speed or do you need a separate too for this?
Best, KB.

So much easier just to use the old Park Tool stamped metal chain checker. Does it fit? Yes? Change the chain.
