This is a video showing what it is like to have a kidney transplant from the donor perspective.

This is Sara, an unrelated donor who didn't know me before she decided to donate.

We had the operation on August 19th, 2008. Both of us are recovering well. Look for my other videos on dialysis and kidney transplant from a patient perspective.

Thank you Sara. You've changed my life physically because I am no longer sick and you've also shown me that there are truly wonderful people out there who just want to help others and ask for nothing in return.

I am forever in your debt.

UPDATE:

I've posted another video of my recovery from transplant one year later. Please check it out.

  • She is fantastic!!! My donor is saying that she has the perfect personality to be a donor. This is a beautiful story. Thank you.

  • > Sara is the perfect donor

    Isn't that true?

As I've said a bunch of times that I knew she would be my donor within the first 5 minutes of meeting her. And if we didn't work out (for a medical incompatibility, for example) then she would be the perfect donor for someone else.

It is a beautiful story all around: I feel extremely fortunate to be chosen by Sara of course, but she feels extremely fortunate to give to me as well.

  • Thank you for showing this. My daughter is named Sarah and she will be donating a kidney to my sister.

  • @Kidneymitzvah

Hey thanks for the kind words. Kidney donation has been the peak experience of my life so far. It was wonderful to go through and even more rewarding watching Damon get better and enjoy his life.

I am so grateful to have gone through this. I wish more people could fully understand what a special feeling you get from helping another in this way.

  • I am in touch with many who have donated a kidney - all of us are doing great, no one has regrets and some of us wish we can do it again!

I know of someone who donated a kidney and had no pain at all even after her kidney donation. Normal to have some pain though after kidney donation.

Sara, welcome to the kidney donors club!

  • Sara - I don't know you - but you are an amazing person. Great inteviews both Part 1 and Part 2.

Damon, hope you will do well with the new kidney and will last you for the rest of your life!

These videos are great - so informative and will forward to others.

Thanks and G-d bless you both!

  • I donated a kidney to a stranger. And since my kidney donation I have been wanting to do more - so I now have a project to help others in need of a kidney. My brother donated a kidney as well - to someone on my list of people in need of a kidney.

If anyone wants more info on kidney donation or would like to matched up with someone in need of a kidney, please contact me. More info on one of my videos about kidney donation - click on KidneyMitzvah in blue. Thanks and G-d bless you.

  • What a beautiful human being, to give the gift of this magnitude while she's alive I commend her for thinking of her fellowman. Thank you again for sharing this vid~ and I wish you the best in all of your endeavors~

  • Good Luck with your journey! I understand when you sat "I am so excited" I was beyond excited too!

  • I will be donating in February...I am so excited!!! Thank you for posting this and sharing your experience. :)

  • Hang in there. Let me know if any questions do come up. I had the weight issue to deal with before surgery too. I was really close to the cut off but managed to lose enough during the summer to be okayed for surgery. Can I ask how old you are?

  • More of the "can dad handle this a second time?" kind. He has been through a lot since trans #1 & I just worry that this may be too much for him. I know the doctor will not go through with it if he deems him a bad candidate. Received my potential donor paperwork. They included a DVD to watch too. If you don't mind, I may come back with ?s if I think of any. I need to lose some weight first. I have started that process. I have a battle of my own to win first, before dad can win his. Pressure :(
