I get the humor in the story, but this could have gone a TOTALLY different way, if they guy didn't survive from the lack of oxygen.

He recognizes the potentially dark and cold humor of the situation. And he knows all too well how it could easily be spun to say he showed reckless disregard for human life. Well played, harmless, and quite funny. The crazy people are those who don't get it.

The funniest thing about the whole interview is that Letterman has the biggest film star in the world and instead of kissing his arse and asking about whatever film he`s promoting he spends most of interview discussing the minutia of one of his hobbies.

When was this? This is such a contrast from the previous video of him that I just watched, the one where he was talking about all that Scientology stuff. He's so alive here and he could actually coherently and easily express his thoughts and feelings. In that other video it looked like as if he got taken over by some kind of entity and had the life sucked out of him.
