@LondonNil There are many bird species that have the name starling. Some look more like grackles and other blackbirds and have the black plumage that is irredescent, this one is a European starling (a young one I think too), widespread in many parts of the world. Tis also an aggressive invader, so I'm kinda happy this one almost became heron food. >:)

@LondonNil Well I live in America. So you may have different starlings. I am thinking of european starling.

ah - it could be a meadow pipit.... its the right environment....

@Pixelrelated I cannot think of another British speices that it can be apart from a Thrush and its not brown enough for a thrush.

@LondonNil :21 seconds you see the bird's shoulders? Starlings don't have shoulders that big, and their head (again) isn't shaped like that. The legs of the starling can be seen when the heron is dragging it around, and you will notice those aren't starling legs. Much different in shape and proportion. Again I may be wrong, but if I am than that is one messed up starling. Per chance are there any other species of starlings that look like that? The ones I know of don't look like that.
Herons will eat all manner of prey, such as frogs and surprisingly often birds.
