Listen to the whole interview: http://www.wnyc.org/shows/lopate/episodes/2009/09/30/segments/141704 Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright tells how Saddam Husseins poet-in-residence inspired her to make diplomatic statements in her meetings with world leaders. Her book Read My Pins: Stories from a Diplomats Jewel Box is part memoir, part social history, and looks at Secretary Albright's experience with global politics.
The U.N. is only half effective, the good side is that nations can talk and negociate with each other peacefully and efficiently. However, their military forces, their supposed "Peacekeepers" are relatively ineffective. Time after time again they have stood by and watched as the armies of evil (metaphorically) march in and destroy the innocent like in the Bosnia and Serbia conflict. They are nothing more then a false sense of security, a military placebo.
