You understand the basics of synthesis and have mastered the Subtractor, you've learned about the Malström's unique "graintable sythesis" technique, and now all you need to know to master the Malström is to understand its special filters, shaper, and mods.

To those who have been following along since week one of Synth School, you'll see that I'm picking up the pace a little bit now that you've built a foundation of knowledge. Believe me, we'll need this pace starting next week when we tackle the Thor synthesizer!

But rest assured, by the time we're done you'll know every synth's capabilities, strengths, and routings. And most importantly, you'll be able to think of a sound you want to create, know which synth will get you that sound, and set about making it with skill.

  • I do love these tutorials.

  • Great Tutorials!

  • great tip number 48

  • Because of these tips, I purchased the Record for Reason owners upgrade and I've not regretted it... my first application was week 13... converting reason songs to record songs... worked perfectly and you are the sole reason Mr. James. Thank you for your brilliance and advanced tips.

  • if anyone wants a tip on making a sick bassline is on an oscillator turn the motion down to -64 so the playback of the graintable is still and then route the osc to the filter then on modulator B turn the filter to +64 or -64 it doesnt matter and sync the lfo ratio there you go you got a wobble. then just go through every graintable with the motion all the way down and mess around with the shift knob and index. trust me you will get insane sounds

  • Can't wait to find tips about thor!

  • Yeah, I'd been checking on the PH website almost every day and only just found this tutorial today... Still, I have been making some sick tunes on Record in the meantime...

  • Reason doesn't use vst which makes it incredibly stable (see 'using reason as a live keyboard rig') and keeps the focus on creating music rather than trawling through plug-ins. If you are suckin down Haterade you are either ill-informed or missing the point. Its a unique approach and thats a good thing.
