Here is the head section of the Raptor Project so far. I use the "Lost Foam Casting Method" to make my sections. I made a hot knife out of a car charger and copper wire to cut the foam shapes. The shapes are then "painted" with a slurry of ordinary wall plaster and a paint brush. I polished the head with a 220 grit flap sander. I'll post more as i go.

  • What kind of foam do you use? Does it completely burn off when the moleten aluminum is poured in?

  • The better the foam the better the casting, no pours that might fill with plaster and have to be touched up with grinding. The foam is cheap stuff, less dense than say cooler foam and even less than packing foam.

  • That is amazing! Did you use sand? Or was the slury enough?

  • 2 coats of plaster slurry and then pour sand around the item. I used an old back massager to vibrate the sand into any voids. Very LowTachi ;)

  • after claning it up the foam castings looked great! Do you have any pics of the finished product?

  • Not yet i'll post more when i get done. Sorry.
