The Legendary Hawthorne Muchachos perform at DCI prelims Ithica N.Y. in 1974. They finished 4th in the finals with 86.950. The solo from Jeff Kievit is amazing to say the least. Someone, somewhere has this performance in color. Just as there exsists SCV 's performance in color from this same show, there must be the same with the Muchachos show. Anyone know where it is? This posting was taken off the tv as i could not import the video directly.

  • I don't know what you mean by calling it raw, maybe it was compared to what is on the field today. Lets just say the corps of the '70s had some balls compared to today. And The Muchachos had the biggest balls of all.

  • Got that video from a ex -Skyliner. I have the whole show on dvd. Very very rare.

  • Thanks for the comments everyone. When it comes to the powerhouse corps of the 1970's, Muchachos is as good as it gets in my opinion. Of course i am a little bias as was in them. But before I was, I was a fan. And it was seeing them in 1975 at Roosevelt Stadium that made me want to be a part of them. I was going to go into Garfield which I loved, but when i saw The Muchachos, well it was over.

  • It has been copied down many generations. So what. The peformance still stands and is mezmerizing.

  • Well I guess the 1975 Muchachos Hershey show will eventually make it up on youtube, now that it has been released on dvd by Drum Corps world. Check it out on their website.

  • You are most welcome!! Love the Muchachos!!!!

  • Love the raw, wall of sound of old school drum corps! Muchachos had it going, very nice!

  • Thanks for posting this video. I marched in the corps from 1971 through 1974 and this is the first video that I have seen of the 1974 corps. Wonderful memories!

  • @RocketRay Pictures De Espaina. I loved playing that piece. I marched "73 to the end in '78

  • I loved them that year. I used to love singing there show along with them when I heard them live and also recorded back off my cassette tape player. Remember those. I recorded many shows in the 70's while marching myself as snare drummer.

    Hey remember Jeff Kivet?

  • Hawthorne was the first Open Class DCI corps I had ever seen, this was also my first season in drumcorps ( New York Lancers). I had the opportunity to watch the hornline practice before prelims that year, ( a class A corps)they absolutely blew me away...made me realize what a great hornline is supposed to sound like. funny thing is, later that day I also saw Madison for the first time....they were monsters that year

  • @therockhopper thats so funny! I marched with St Francis Sancians that year and we had to go on at like 6 a.m. for Prelims...that was back in the day when there were so many drum corps they had to start Prelims at the crack of dawn!

  • It was really hot that day. The white silk shirts under the bolero weren't exactly cool. I loved hearing Jeff's amalgamation of refried spanish licks that he continually recycled in those years again.

Note to another commenter. We did sound not so loud sometimes - but that was when we were not facing straight ahead. :)
