Yeah, it's a Weston Woods production... it was on Youtube until just recently, I don't know why they deleted it. You can buy it online from Scholastic, but it's $50. :/

i, also, have been searching forever for the animated version. i finaly found the book by googling. i remember going to the library at school, back in the 60's, and seeing a short film. he comes to earth, goes to a party, and gets thrown in jail. as the moon waxes or wans, so does he, and eventually slips through the bars and goes back up into the sky. i loved it! this trailer looks good. never saw it before. : )

Did anybody ever see an old cartoon called 'The Moon Man' or something? When its a half moon he is evil and when its a full moon he's nice. I loved it as a child and I haven't seen it since...
