Decided to put together a video/photo slideshow of the photos I took of the USS LST-325 World War II ship as it was in Moline, Illinois on 08.29.08 and Clinton, Iowa on 09.04.08. I included some actual news bulletins that came across the radios and T.V. during the time of war.

The LST (Land Ship Tank) is an amphibious vessel designed to land battle-ready tanks, troops and supplies directly onto enemy shores. These ships were useful during World War II, the Korea and Vietnam wars and belonged to all services including the Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, Air Force and Merchant Marine.

Most LSTs were scrapped or given to other countries. In the summer of 2000, LST-325 was saved from the scrap yard in Souda Bay, Crete, Greece, by an aging crew of 50 Navy veterans. That number dwindled to just 30 by the time they left Crete on Nov. 14 for the 6,200-mile voyage. After 13 days on the Mediterranean Sea, a stop in Gibraltar became necessary for major repairs. On Dec. 12, a crew of 29 sailed for home, arriving Jan. 10, 2001.

This particular LST was originally known as LST-325 during the Second World War, USNS LST-325 during its arctic operations in the 1950's, and later L-144 (A/G Syros) while it was in the service of the Greek Navy. It was acquired by The USS LST Ship Memorial, Inc., in 2000, and caught considerable public attention when our veteran crew brought it on a 6,500-mile journey from the Greek island of Crete to Mobile, Alabama.

  • As a crew member of LST 325, I want to thank you for posting your fine production work on our LST 325. All of us are very proud of 'our' Gray Lady from WW II. On behalf of all of us from the 325, "Well Done"

Bob - (crew member & tour guide)

  • Hey, you're very welcome Bob. I believe I may have talked to you a bit while it was stopped in Moline, IL. I know I talked to a tour guide named Bob anyways! Yeah, it took quite a bit of time for me to decide on the order of photos and audio...I was hoping it was alright! Thanks for the comment! I have another video as I passed the 325 on a Riverboat, it's on my old account...you may have seen it already, but it's usually the first "Related Video" on the right side. Thanks again!

  • Very well done! I especially liked the audio you selected to accompany the slide show. Very nice job!

  • Thanks, Leslie! :-)

  • Oh! if only Dad was still with us. He served on the 173 in WW 2

  • My father was one of the troops that was rescued by LST 325 in the English Channel on Dec. 28, 1944 after the troop ship HMS Empire Javelin was torpedoed by a German U-boat. He took the only known photos of the Empire javelin as it sank, and also some shots of LST 325.

  • I remember this, I loved this LST. It was very nice and how I imagined it.

  • we visited the 325 at Moline and put up a bunch of fotos :)

  • Hi!! My Dad is actually working on the ship as we speak!!! He worked on it 2 years ago but it was mostly PR. This time he is working. He was an navy engineman during vietnem ( 1964-68). I love hearing his stories over and over, from the past and now from the present. How exciting!! I cant wait to show him your video when he gets home. Thank you for the video!!
