THIS is music. :)

this man was Chopin's soldier. he was a true artist and he brought Chopin to life like absolutely no other. he was an acceptor and a dedicator, and boy was he successful at presenting his intention. Rubenstein taught us Chopin.

@karin14hug I think the beginning was written with the intent of being very straightforward, basic and structured. That section lays the foundation for the rest of the piece to build off of; after the beginning the piece develops in a very improvisational manner, and is far more suited to artistic deviations in tempo and expression.

@karin14hug It's "piece".

Rubinstein playing Chopin is the gold standard to my ears. Very pure, elegant. Thank you for posting.
I really love it the peace itself... but he plays the beginning a little bit square and the continuation it amazing but almost without pedal and legato.. it sounds too much light and clear..
even though it's Rubinstein's special playing..

I'm surprised, that you heard the Grave 'a little bit square', little plays with tempo are in almost every bar! I admire very much this economy. of course, the region between 'too much' and 'too little' is different for all of us :)

actually, perhaps you touch something special about this performer... of course, there are times, when we may prefer another artist, but it seems, Rubinstein is never wrong! there is always some sort of musical form and 'health' (!?) in his interpretation.

an anecdote from my own experience with the op. 49 over many years, it is a very dangerous work (for me), so easy to lose myself, how to say, in the sheer joy of pianism? to play it with so much discipline and form and restraint as Rubinstein here, may not be the only way, but it is very difficult! :)
