Mixing upbeat Spanish rock with pop influences, Fresno-based Distrito Torre is quickly establishing a vibrant reputation headlining local clubs like Babylon and The Starline. Formed in 2010 by singer/songwriter Omar Naré (and named after the Tower District, Fresno's artistic neighborhood and home to musicians, poets, dancers, and artists), the band is currently in the studio recording their debut EP.

Of course, Omar Naré is not a newbie. By age 17, he had sold 5000 copies of his self-titled album and grabbed the attention of Grammy-nominated producer Christian de Walden (Paulina Rubio, Marta Sánchez). Several months later, Naré landed in Italy and got the industry education of a lifetime. "There were pro songwriters, killer session musicians, top-notch producers, and an inexpert teenager. I had a lot to learn," he smiled. By late 2009 (or two college degrees, several countries, and a wife later), Naré had built up an extensive songwriting catalog. It was time to create a band.

Fate was on Naré's side when he found drummer Frank Sánchez. A Fresno-native, Sánchez has shared the bill with artists like Papa Roach to Los Tigres del Norte and has toured Mexico and the United States professionally. He produced two albums for EMI Latin recording artist Chuy Jr. and co-produced Luz María's new record from Objetivo Fama. The final puzzle piece was bassist Crissy Martinez who joined Distrito Torre recently. From Fresno, Martinez plays with Viper City Brass Band and Mike Dana and has recorded at Disney. Both musicians bring rockabilly, punk, and even norteña influences to Distrito's brand of Rock en Español.

Pointing to Spanish Rock favorites like Jaguares, Enanitos Verdes, Soda Stereo, alt bands like Nico Vega and Mars Volta, even Mariachi legend Vicente Fernandez, Distrito Torre is not afraid of simplicity. "We're three guys." said Frank. "The 80's punk attitude was about stripping music down to raw emotion. That's still current."

That ability to play current comes through in Naré's writing. "I try to write songs people can relate to," nods Naré. "For me, the best music captures a collective feeling." His songs, like "Fue una mentira," written in a scummy motel, are at once introspective, resolute and inspiring. On "Yo nací con fuego," a band favorite, Omar explains, "I wanted that bold feeling; a song that pumps you up. It's about an attitude: I'm not going to let anyone stop me."

Take one listen to Distrito Torre's demo and you can hear hope for the future and a band that can cut across any number of age or genre demographics. The solid Spanish Rock anthems will remind even the most cynical that absolutely anything is possible. ###
