It seems to cynical to be lovey dovey.

To me the lyrics are about a controlling relationship between a young and idealistic woman and someone (older?) in a position of trust; and it is also about the singer having fully woken up to this fact by the line "my belief is gone" when her faith in him and maybe love in general is gone. If you see the official music video it explains a lot.
