Hungriya? If you aren't yet, I'm sure you will be once you've seen what's being served at Orusorru Restaurant in Chennai. Hear why its dishes are cooked as they are, where they fit into the scheme of Indian food in general, and how this eatery has become a favourite of Kollywood stars and local foodies alike.

Thanks yet again to Shyam of Wannabe Studios http://network.wannabestudios.org/ for his shooting skills and editing help, for organising my trips to Chennai and introducing me to this restaurant and restaurateur.

  • Enjoyed this a lot. You're a great host, David.

  • @manningroad Thanks for hanging through it, Steve- my longest YT vid thus far- and glad you appreciate my hosting/interview style! I took a course in it years ago, and hope to sell the idea of a show to- well- whoever might pay a bloke for this sort of thing.

  • @incubusslayer Actually no, I didn't know that, but it does make perfect sense. And confirms my feeling that Asia's food culture is frankly ahead of ours.

  • @videowilliams You're welcome, thanks for the video. You might already know this from your travels but there's also a scientific reason why they serve food on banana leaves in southern India. Banana is a mineral rich plant and putting hot food on top brings it out of the leaf and into your food. Probably also why they steam/bake food wrapped in banana leaves in Thailand and other parts of the world.

  • @qualqui You're right in raising KFC, and for that matter most of the fast food chains we have. From burgers to fries, from pizzas to pies, the vast majority of that stuff is finger food too!

  • @incubusslayer Thanks for that saying, for a scientific reason for eating by hand, and for liking this vid!

  • @incubusslayer I totally agree with ya,....no wonder when i eat southern fried chicken, it tastes so much BETTER, when we eat with our hands(and lick our fingers,...thus the logo of KFC, 'finger-licking good',...so drab and dull when we cut the chicken with a knife and fork, its barbaric! A great Aunt Petra of mine always used to say, 'Don't give me cutlery, give me extra food instead',....she would have totally enjoyed eatin' at this restaurant! = )

  • @qualqui An old Indian saying. Eating food with cutlery is like making love to an interpreter. For people with more "westernized" sensibilities, it might sound a bit gross and messy but the food actually tastes better with conveyed through your own fingers as it spreads over a larger area in your mouth. And it's a more wholesome experience altogether.

  • @qualqui I'm glad this interview held some interesting facts for you. It did for me too! Indeed, this eating-with-the-fingers thing, for me, was a bit uncomfortable at first. My parents' voices kept on piping up in my head- "Don't play with your food!"- but as you say, it's the most natural way to do it. I really need to visit Mexico one of these days and use those corn tortilla spoons. By which I mean Mexico proper- not just the bars of Tijuana with a bunch of drunken American college friends!

  • FINGER FOOD!!!! This is down my alley, as a mexican eating tacos and eating our main dish with "spoons" of corn tortilla(pieces of tortilla torn and used to scoop the food up), this should come natural to me,...hehehehe...lol...i had thought the vast majority of indians were vegetarian, i was wrong, so 70% north indians are vegan and 70% south indians are omnivores, eatin' their mutton, chicken, fish, etc. I learned something new today about this AWESOME Country,...thumbs up to ya good buddy!! =D
