Hong Kong's parliament is debating a controversial railway project that links the Chinese territory to the city of Guangzhou.

Opponents of the project say it is too expensive and it has drawn activists out on to the streets in protest.

Rob McBride reports on the railway debate and why it encompasses a much wider issue.

  • The government cannot assume it knows best. "Moving forward" could in fact be "moving backward". Mao thought he was moving the country forward when he launched the Cultural Revolution, when in fact he moved the country backward many years.

$66 billion is way too much and there are cheaper ways of building the railway which are just as effective (if not more so). Finally, who gets control of the land in West Kowloon? No one has said anything.
