@hellcatdave1 The Russians can thank Lockheed for financing the YAK-141 project. Without Lockheed that project would have never gone anywhere off of paper. It is an idea that the Russians had but they could not get it to work and when the Berlin Wall fell Lockheed offered to help and Russia agreed. And if you really want to go there, Henry Ford industrialized Russia so Russia can thank an American that they are not the peasant nation that they were before the 30s.

(Cough) You guys at Lockheed Martin can thank the Russians at Yakovlev, you know, the ones who helped you design the engine system, which is based off the worlds 2nd most advanced VTOL, the Yakovlev Yak0141 (NATO Reported name 'FreeStyler'

x-35 is now the f-35 joint stealth fighter jsf for short

still great
X stands for Experimental, just like B for Bomber, F for Fighter, A for (Ground)Attack.
X planes are not given names because they are frequently (but not always) one of a kind planes. Names are assigned to production aircraft where there will be dozens, hundreds, or in the old days, thousands made over the lifetime of the design
