It's not a "valve trombone" for christ sake...it's Bob Brookmeyer!!!! one of the best musicians who ever lived.
He does things that can only be done on Valves....half valve smears and other great funky effects....Bob is about ideas baby! get with the program...it's like bach....if Bach is played on a cello or a flute it don't matter no-how ...it's still genius shit!

The melody of "Ontet" can be found on the tag of "Godchild", written by George Wallington, arranged by Mr. Mulligan, from Birth Of The Cool, recorded in 1949. It comes in at about 2:11 on that track. Fantastic theme...

bob brookmeyer is a ninja on the valve trombone, and his chromatic valleys and peaks style of playing is probably better suited on the valves for him. Plus I think I read somewhere that he used to have a slide, but that he said he was terrible at it.
plus i think the valves have an interesting sound to them.

i like the tune i love all the players but i dislike the valve trombone, not to be an ass, but i feel like the point of a trombone is that it slides and it's real pointless to play one with valves. he was still an awesome player regardless.
