So with the new equipment in my possession, (I'm still waiting on the new skimmer pump and the actual aquarium) It's time to get things ready for use. First up - the stand. I decided to buy a 10mil rated tarp to lay down in the bottom of the stand to protect the wood from small leaks or (more likely) spills. I cut the tarp to shape, then stapled it to the sides inside of the aquarium stand. The staples are about an inch off the bottom, so in theory, the water would have to reach that level before touching the stand. I also made it a point to fasten the power strips to the stand as high up as functionally possible to reduce the chances of them getting wet. I will also be plugging in those little plastic "outlet plugs" that people usually use to keep baby fingers out of outlets - to reduce the chance of condensation due to humidity.

  • why not paint it with that rubber paint for basements??

  • Taedom,

That's a good question. The reason I did it this way is because the bottom board is not just one solid piece of wood, but several pieces of wood - thus crevices between them. I like the idea of the tarp because it will catch all water - and it was pretty inexpensive. I think less than $20. Your approach is a clever one though. It may work great for others. Thanks for the tip!
