Originally released in 1973 on Island records. it's released a hundred times since then on a variety of labels such as EG, Polydor, DGM, Opal LTD and probably more.

Robert Fripp was a guitar player from King Crimson. Brain Eno was a keyboard player from Roxy Music.

One day, Eno invited Fripp over to his house one day to play around with his new toy, which was two tape recorders that were rigged up so that if you played a sound into one it would be repeated later at a lower volume and again even later at an even lower volume. They recorded a track called "The Heavenly Music Corporation" in just two takes, using only a Les Paul guitar, The Fripp Pedalboard and Two Modified Revox A77 Tape Recorders.

A year later, they hooked up in a studio and made another track called "Swastika Girls" and a synthesizer with a digital sequencer into the mix.

The result was a prototype for all of the ambient music to come. The music consists of guitar swells and drones, looped and layered together into big walls of sound and harmonies. The music shifts and dips as Eno disables and enables the tape device, creating some dynamic and sonic textures.

Back 1973, no other music sounded like this. It was poorly received and their record label hated it. No one was ready for music that was just meant for atmosphere.

This album was very interesting to listen to, and I have listened to it several times since I bought it a few months ago. You don't have to be a fan of King Crimson or Roxy Music to like this. In fact, it's probably easier if you know nothing about them. This is strictly experimental music and sound manipulation. Even by today's standards, this music sounds very futuristic and doesn't sound dated in the least.

If you are at all a fan of experimental or ambient music, I highly recommend checking this album out. Even though it is just a prototype and not meant to be taken seriously (that's what Eno said), it is still a very creative and lush record, full of interesting guitar arrangements and new sounds. The 2008 version I have also has the songs played in reverse and the 1st track played at half speed, giving at even more droning effect.

  • How do you know it wasn't from Vanilla Ice ?

  • ambient music, pretty cool stuff...its like mixing one noise after the other, great vid man! HITLAH! lol

  • Kinda. I'm sure there's many ways to make it. It's just calm, trippy sounds.

  • Ah, back when Island didn't suck!

This album is phenomenal. Have you heard Eno's other ambient stuff?

  • I've listened to a few selections back in the day, but this is the only one I own.

I read that Evening Star and Discreet Music are awesome. I'll probably seek those out sometime.

You got any recommendations, Anthony ?

  • (and the geek shall inherit the earth) still have not bought the half speed version yet... yet I keep watching this really geeky review... lol...

  • A lot of what is said here isn't entirely accurate, lots of subjective waffle and guesswork ... 'stuff like India is New Age' ... eh?

  • I have the fold-out cover

  • This guy is wrong about almost everything to do with this album.

  • Heavenly Music Co. at half speed.... and blue dream space cakes....

  • Robert Fripp is actually still in King Crimson.

  • HOW DO YOU KNOW ALL THE DETAILS ; ARE THEY INSIDE THE CD ?!

  • Is this guy rolling????

  • @YoureWrongImRight Evening Star and Discreet Music are awesome. You should check Evening Star. It is similar to NP. Discreet is more traditional ambient and is great for relaxing or reading.
