I just performed this as part of a quartet yesterday. I'm very impressed with the Cornell Glee Club because this is a REALLY hard piece of music! But I'm really puzzled as to how the chorus moved up a whole step throughout the piece but found their way back to C major at the very end. Did anyone else notice that? Either way, excellent job Cornell!
No, but it is similar in story... if definitely not in style. I'm not sure if the Dropkick Murphys song is based on a real letter, but this is exact text from a letter that Pfc. Jesse A. Givens had written for his wife shortly before he died in Iraq set to music by Lee Hoiby. I think both are great in their different ways. Hope this helps!
I think this is one of the most meaningful songs I have ever heard about how hard it is to say "Good-bye" when physical death takes a beloved husband by surprise. It could apply to anyone who anticipates their own, untimely, time of passing from here to eternity
we are doing this song in honor of our director, who is going to the middle east very soon. As high school students, he is like a second father to us, putting in so much time to get the best out of us musically and personally. He is compassionate, and we will miss him so much. he sang this to us and we couldnt keep from crying, and will be sure to do the same when we perform this in may. This piece is gorgeous.
This brings back my memories of the Minnesota Men's Chorus ... Yikes ...that was 37 years ago .
