Chaguaramo (2011)

En el jardín de mi casa tengo una árbol de chaguaramo, también conocido como palmera real (Roystonea oleracea) que mide unos 12 metros de altura y cada tanto tiempo se desprende una hoja que a su vez mide entre 3 y 4 metros y yo tengo que sacarla para el camión de la basura.

La base de la hoja mide como metro y medio y se me ocurrió que parecía una escultura si se colocaba verticalmente. Es tan gruesa como un tronco así que también penśe que podría tocarse como un tambor de tronco al dejarla secar. El resto de la hoja también suena al sacudirla arrastrarla y pisarla, sobre todo si también se ha dejado secar.

Ese fue el punto de partida para la realización de este video.

Mi hijo Constantín tiene una participación importante al improvisar ritmos sobre la base de la hoja seca con unas baquetas cortas fabricadas con un palo de escoba, sacudiendo y golpeándola contra el piso y también sacudiendo, agitando y pisando la parte superior de la hoja.

Todos los sonidos provienen de la hoja desprendida del chaguaramo y las imágenes de la hoja, tronco y de todo el árbol. Muchos de los sonidos e imágenes fueron procesadas digitalmente.

Este video fue realizado exclusiva e íntegramente bajo el sistema operativo Ubuntu, con los programas Ardour, QjackCtl, Xjadeo, Cinelerra, Kdenlive y The Gimp.



Chaguaramo (2011)

In my garden I have a 40 foot chaguaramo tree, also known as royal palm tree (Roystonea oleracea). Every so often a 10 to 13 foot leaf crashes to the ground and I have to prepare it for garbage disposal.

The base of the leaf is about 5 feet high and as thick as a trunk and I thought it made a pretty nice sculpture. I also thought that dried out it could sound somewhat like a log drum. With the rest of the leaf I could also make some interesting sounds rustling, dragging and stepping on it.

That's how I came up with the idea for this video.

My son Constantin improvises rhythms on the base of the leaf with short sticks cut from a broomstick and also banging it against the floor and shaking it. He also shakes, drags and steps on the upper part of the dried out leaf while I tend to the camera and microphone.

All sounds were produced with the chaguaramo leaf and the images como from the leaf, trunk and the whole tree. Many of the sounds and images have been digitally processed.

This video was produced entirely and exclusively under a Ubuntu operating system with the programs Ardour, QjackCtl, Xjadeo, Cinelerra, Kdenlive and The Gimp.
