Alex Shane is not known as a man who keeps his views to himself, but even for the FWA Head of Product Content this past Tuesday night's round table discussion was an unusually outspoken occasion. As well as a fiery exchange of views with former two-time British Heavyweight Champion Justin Richards, Shane used the 60-minute debate to express some shockingly forthright opinions and to make an extraordinary claim about the promotion's flagship storyline.
The panel, which also consisted of FWA Managing Director Tony Simpson and women's wrestling star Jetta, had been scheduled to meet for only half an hour, and were set to discuss the controversial seven-minute video message that was played to fans at Hope and Glory in August. However, 24 hours before the discussion was filmed, WWE published a video on their website featuring Vince McMahon alluding to outside forces attempting to tear his organisation apart and asking fans to respond by helping to "Stand Up For WWE". In light of the striking similarity between this and the accusations made in the video at Hope and Glory, discussion host Dave Bradshaw moved away from the planned discussion at the start of the programme to ask Shane directly whether the "Agenda vs. Resistance" feud is something more than an FWA storyline.
What followed was quite remarkable: a string of jaw-dropping claims from Shane which are guaranteed to make waves far beyond UK shores. But the panel also discussed whether the live crowd's negative reaction in Wolverhampton meant that the video was a failure, and whether there is any place in today's professional wrestling for such a complex storyline that apparently blurs the line between fact and fiction.
It is a thoroughly absorbing piece of television -- so much so that it was decided immediately after filming to air the entire programme in place of this week's Front Line. As the FWA approaches European Uprising in less than a month, this discussion is sure to further crank up the intensity of the debate surrounding the FWA's main storyline -- but more than that, it is simply a must-see for anyone with more than a passing interest in the professional wrestling industry.
