Saw Herman in August 1947-the ORIGINAL four brothers. The saxes were Getz,Sims,Challof,Sam Marowitz(lead alto)and Herbie Steward on tenor who was replaced by Al Cohn four months later.Shorty Rogers and Ernie Royal were the trumpet soloists-Earl Swope on trombone-Don Lamond on drums.A great group but Getz,Sims,Rogers, and Steward looked like they just got of high school!!!
I knew JR played in Getz' group in early 50s. Hadn't known till this clip that Raney had played with Woody. Makes sense. That is one fabulous band. Trumpet section is awesome. Woody's vocal is weak though. (Compare to great clip of Louis Jordan doing Caledonia.)
Raney's role (if, indeed that is Jim we're seeing) here is to play ala Freddie Greene. I don't think he's even plugged in.

Yeah, I had to grit my teeth during Herman's vocal. It reminded me of a blackface minstrel show.

You can tell the four brother sax section all had their major sound influence from Lester Young.

Most people say that the second herd was the best post-swing big band.

@RootsinBrooklyn probably . Jimmy Raney and Stan Getz both had origins in Herman's herd. Getz had the utmost praise for Raney too!

Can't tell just by listening, but it looks like a young Jimmy Raney on guitar (?)
