The 1956 Melbourne Olympics was the 1st Games to use the electric foil. Christian d'Oriola had previously dominated visually judged foil fencing but in the 1955 World Championships (the 1st time the electrical foil scoring apparatus was used at a World Championships) he came 2nd to Joseph Gyuricza (Hungary). After winning the Foil Event at this Olympics d'Oriola announced that he didn't like this new weapon and didn't like what it was doing to the sport vowing never to fence it again. He returned to France and only fenced what has become known as "steam foil". For more information on fencing, Christian d'Oriola and the 1956 Olympics check out www.fencingonline.com
