The Roth family lead a quiet life in a small village in the German Alps during the early 1930's. When the Nazi's come to power, the family is divided and Martin Brietner, a family friend is caught up in the turmoil. Written by Col Needham {col@imdb.com}

University professor Victor Roth leads a contented life with family and friends in the south German Alps of 1933. This changes quickly and dramatically once Adolf Hitler comes to power. Most of the town embraces the new creed while a few friends such as Martin Breitner do not. Victor himself is "non-Aryan" and his two step-sons soon leave his house, while his loyal daughter Freya breaks her engagement from Nazi-inclined Fritz. Against increasing difficulties an attachment between Freya and Martin starts to grow. Written by Jeremy Perkins {jwp@aber.ac.uk}

  • The Christmas before my mother passed away she taped this off of the t.v. so that I could finally see it. She included a note that said that at the time she thought the movie was about good and evil, but she later came to realize it was about doing what is right no matter the consequences. That is why, she said, she named me Freya for 'free'.

  • My mother got my name from this movie when she was 15 years old, at home with the measles. She decided then and there that if she ever had a daughter she would name her Freya for Free. My name Freya Michael means 'she who is free and strong.'

  • Here in the good old USA only one party can claim the sad state of being racist.....and we all know what one that is. Sad....very sad.....you'd be stuned to know how many are in this country, even to this day. I see it all the time so I know what I say is true.

  • @Dava1000 Mostly true, but the film script says Adolf Hitler in one of the early scenes when they take a moment out of the birthday party to listen to the radio news. Great movie!

  • @bennehb Gee, I thought we had only one party which is the property party whose only interest is in furthering the interests of the oligarchy. This property party has two right wings called the republicans and democrats.

  • The only thing it lacks is dissenters being labelled as racists.

  • @Kedziekid pfft! As if two parties is enough!

  • Very prophetic line by Robert Young, saying, "this is what we need, a strong man in the saddle". "Now there will be one party, and one party only"! Hope that doesn't happen here. Long live the two party system!

  • This film is important today in demonstrating how Nazism impacted a family in the early days of the Reich. But notice that MGM was very careful not to mention the words Germany, Fueher or even Jews in the script for fear of a backlash against its film distribution in the German market. Unfortunately it had the opposite effect.
