  • My father served aboard the uss salem 139. It didnt get to see any combat to my knowlege its entire life span, but i hear the New Port News was it's sister ship. He was the last to disembark off the salem decommissioning in 1959. I suppose to not have any combat experience, also may mean it did it's job well also in detering over the years , I wish i could see the two ships . Dad longed to show us boys the two ships.

  • @SuperHoneycutt Thanks for your comment. The USS Salem is now a Museum Ship near Boston. We also have our USS Newport News Museum aboard the Salem. Please visit us when you are in th area. I have several Youtube videos here, as well as on Thunder148, featuring the Salem.

  • I'm able to see what I've been missing for quite some time! We talked 1 ago on the phone! 68-69 Newport News 148 Thunder. thanks Dex

  • SALEM and NEWPORT NEWS were twins. SALEM spent its active duty as a very effective deterrent. She is preserved today, and if not for lack of imagination and funds could serve again as one tough surface combatant.

  • USA was defeated by Vietnam, however so many people in Vietnam had to die for the peace and independence T_T

  • Thanks for the comment, Shipmate. For others reading this, Fred served with me on Thunder during the Cuban Missile Crisis. I've often said that I was more affraid that one day in 1962, alongside a Ruskie ship, than I was 5 years later when 28 different N Viet gun sites were shooting at us. Dexter

  • Dexter, as always you are keeping the memories alive for those who served our country. The News was the epitome of a Naval Ship. I am thankful we both served on her. Fred Sturgeon
