The Boswell sisters to the rescue! Their harmonies were so well synchronized it's a little scary!
Films like this are from a long gone era. I often think what these people would think after watching some of today's movies. I am sure they would be dumbfounded and dismayed at what hollywood has become.
The Boswell Sisters were one of the first white group the emulate their heros, Louis Armstrong, Bessie Smith and Ethel Waters. The Boswells influenced later singers like Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, and many others. Look for "Hand me down, my walking cane" where the Boswells mock their Aunt Mattie who told them not to go (in showbiz)..they adlib, "Now we're singin' on the radio!"
The Boswells were just slightly younger than Louis Armstrong. They followed the same path that many of the black musicians from New Orleans took to find fame...Chicago, Los Angeles, New York... And there is no doubt that Heebie Jeebies was their lucky song - a theme introduced by Louis Armstrong. But according to Connee, her heroes were Mamie Smith and Enrico Caruso. Whoever - they were fabulous and still impress.
