On a wild and blustery day over 1,300 feet above sea level, the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway celebrated the opening of the Big Pit Branch, by holding a South Wales Industrial Stam Gala, which featured are the following locos

* RSH 'Austerity' 0-6-0ST No 71515 'Mech Navvies Ltd'
* Bagnall 0-4-0ST No 19 'HM Dockyard Devonport'
* Peckett 0-4-0ST No 1163 'Whitehead'
* Peckett 0-6-0ST No 2150 'Mardy Monster'
* Peckett 0-6-0ST No 1859 'Sir Gomer'
For me the star of the show was the mighty 1954 built Peckett 0-6-0 ' Mardy Monster' This impressive loco has a tractive effort of over 29,000 lbs, which is more than many larger main line locos, and makes a terrific sound when working hard.
Congratulations for all the staff and volunteers at the P&BR for putting on such a tremendous show.

  • @acw71000 Every year this railway gets better and better Austin, and also has the advantage of being within a world heritage site, has plenty of support towards it's future growth. It's also a splendid location at over 1,300 ft to watch industrial locos at work....Bob
