any of you old farts know the version that was a big hit in the 80's...

Great version. Thanks a lot!!!!

You have to put artistic works in the context of their times... I'm sure if Lady Gaga tried to perform her act in 1930 she'd be in jail...
-
wow, this came out before the movie?

@HairH2O The song does have a dark air to it. Before I listened to the lyrics properly, I thought it was describing stuck-up rich people
-
It's about putting on the Ritz. That's it. Dolling up, going out, having a time of it.

@kallemick He's not entirely wrong. However, I don't think it was meant to be racist or it would be more obvious and hateful. In other words, you'd know it was racist if it were. At worst, it might be considered non-PC but that would be overreacting. Back in 1929, no one would have batted an eye. If someone wrote this in 2011, there might be a problem. Either way, it's more about culture and the classes than race anyhow.

Duke at the cotton Club video I think better explains this song.

@DajaWaja I think he is singing about the rich getting out of their stuck up life style and letting lose at the "Cotton Club" in Harlem.
Happy times just before the Market Crash
