Girls Laughing Hysterically at the super-powered Barbie Quad! - September 25, 2010

I converted from the standard 12v battery in Maya's Barbie Power Wheels KFX ATV to wiring a new motorcycle battery (for a Harley Sportster that I bought and it was the wrong size for Victoria's Shadow) in series with it for a total of 24v. The stock atv was already pretty fast with a 2.5 MPH setting and a 5 MPH setting - it now goes double that! We broke a front wheel off yesterday due to the battering the toy takes due to the speed, but I fixed it by drilling a hole in the axle and using a cotter pin instead of the stock press-fit on washer. This quad may be up for even more mods in the future - I love the way the girls laugh when they ride it!

Follow up... A few days later it was very warm, about 75 degrees and the cousins came over. Between 4 kids riding the quad with few "cooling breaks," the left rear wheel transmission failed because the rod around which the primary gear rotates became too hot due to its proximity to the electric motor. It melted its plastic housing seat. I solved the problem by drilling the gear and transmission case out to accommodate a larger diameter bolt going through the gear and the case, as well as re-lubricating all of the gears with high-temp grease. No problems so far, but I expect the right side to fail eventually as well.
