Vivien Leigh - Rebecca Screen test

This is a screen test of Vivien Leigh for the role of Mrs DeWinter in Rebecca. I'm glad she didn't get the part. She was too strong and beautiful to be such a weak woman as Mrs DeWinter was.

fontaine was perfect for this role because she looked a little washed out and weak, whereas Vivien looks stronger. I know they use make up and wardrobe to make her look mousy and I know fontaine was a terrific actress for the part and i think she played it superbly.

I love Vivienne, but I don't see her in this role. She could have been a wonderful Rebecca, if she wasn't dead before the film starts.

I agree with what everyone is saying below. Most actors and actresses have "their roles". Vivien's was Scarett O'Hara and Joan's was Mrs De Winter. Neither would have been right to play the other.

Joan Fontaine was a very beautiful woman!!!! She had an innocence that Vivien lacked for the part of Rebecca.... Fontaine = perfect as Rebecca, Vivien = perfect as Scarlett.........

The main reason I think I would have wanted to see Vivien as Rebecca was because I love the Leigh/Olivier dynamic. They WERE one of Hollywood's golden couples, so it's always a treat to see them working together. That said, Fontaine for me was an excellent Rebecca and despite the loss of another potential Viv/Larry film, I'm glad they cast her instead.
