  • Ralfy, on the subject of casks - it has become a kind of recieved wisdom to say that colour doesn't matter when it comes to the quality of a whisky . But, when you have a row of whisky samples from different casks of the same wood from the same distillery type lined up next to each other, doesn't a darker colour in fact tell you that that specific cask has been more active than the others , and is likely to give a better result?

  • @chrish12345

not necessarily, it's not about being more active, but the quality of the activity.

  • Ralfy how does Duncan Taylors test if the cask is active, do they just compare samples take from different times to see if there's a change in the whisky maturation or actually have ways of testing the wood itself?

  • @chrish12345

well selected 'quality' casks are easy spotted by calibre of cooperage and quality of smell (sniffing through the bung hole) Good casks give good results, all established through smelling and tasting the develpoing spirit.

  • I´ll keep my eyes out for Tams Drams the next time I´ll order some bottles from Scotland. I have a question thats WAY off topic: Do you know what whiskys goes into the Famous Grouse blend? I consider it myself a "sh*t" whisky but I have a co-worker who drinks it like water ;) Thought I would educate him a wee bit!

  • @LLABCBBKP

.... Macallan, Highland Park and .... the rest they keep to themselves at FG !

  • Coincidentally, a friend of mine has just opened a shop specialising in railroad memorabilia - it's called Dam's Trams.

  • I must visit it one time Ralfy. Those Port Ellen bottles look very tempting!
