Two families are cut off from their children
CHIMAYO, N.M. (KRQE) - Parents said a strange New Mexico cult has captured the hearts and minds of their kids and cut them off from their families.
Their leader is a man who goes by the name of "Golden Elk." Parents of the young adults he's recruited say he's brainwashed them.
The cult was the subject of an in-depth episode of Wednesday's Dr. Phil. The episode follows the paths of two young adults who join the cult and shut their families out of their lives.
"Golden Elk" is also known as Clemente Suriano. He lives in a home with his followers in Chimayo.
It's unknown how many members live in the suspected cult home.
Neighbors in Chimayo said they often hear chants, witness flames from ritual burnings and have even seen animal sacrifices.
