unbelievably clear - how wonderful

@otterhouse Hello, I wonder if there are new ways to transfer cylinders into digital audio without the need for a needle. Perhaps the 'virtual stylus' technique used for the phonautograph etchings might be of use?
-
@videogamehistorian I made a new transfer of that Brahms cylinder and uploaded it on my channel. You can actually now hear something Brahms performance style now... Curious what you think of it.

im in awe.
this is the clearest and most discernable cylinder for its age ive heard (bar that one from 1860, the oldest recorded sound, here on youtube i believe)

Thank you I was told by a few people who know the topic that the cylinder was gone. Thank you for correcting me.

Yep, definitely get the Marston CD, it's one of the most important issues in many years. Some of the Josef Hofmann 1894 records and the 12 year old Heifetz records sound superb.
WRT to the Brahms cylinder: Fact is that we are not actually hearing the cylinder.
What we hear is an acetate dub of the very tired cyliinder, broadcast by the BBC and taped by someone. Neither the cylinder nor the acetate seem to have survived.
Cheers,
120 years later still sounding crystal clear!!

The Brahms cylinder does exist but is almost unaudible. It is actually stored in Austria. The famous transfer that we know is a 1935 transfer on 78rpm (acetate or other) which was also used again for an LP album. If you want the exact story, there is a cheap CD called Brahms Spielt Klavier and sold by this Autrian Library. It contains three different transfers including the 1935 one, and even the second part of the cylinder, hardly audible, but identified.
