I was very lucky to be standing one row from the front for this amazing cocert. Anette was fantastic.. although at the begining of this video you can hear the girl behind me singing her heart out :). The video is a bit wobbly and unfortunatley the sound dips when all the instruments come in but overall I'm pleased with it.
Enjoy :)

No, I am sorry but I did not.

I brought basic technical aspects of the voice that have nothing to do with style.

Singing a song by the notes (and not by ear like Anette), a good ear and vocie to hit a simple musical note, to hold a note's duration, to avoid nazality .. etc.

Those are basic music principles any singer knows and respects.

Even at school at optional music classes teach you these things in the first year.

She has no talent, that's the difference.

  • If you don't like the way Annette sings that's fine, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but thankfully for the band there are plenty of us out there who can appreciate both women's styles and remain faithful to the true point of Nightwish which is the lyrical content and mood of the songs.

  • @12321marianne Gladly lets hope walking in the air remains one of her songs as I found it dire from the first moment I heard it.

Tarja's voice and Annette's voice are incomparable because they are so different in style, that is one of the reasons she was chosen, so these comparative arguments (especially when you try bringing in technical aspects of the voice) are farcical because you cannot compare the two.

  • @reafras

And lastly before i get flagged as spammer: Chloe has a fair interpretation, but cannot be compared.

Tarja is a way superior singer in all aspects (as an "animal", range, technique, control, power, timbre.. I can fill this page really).

She never covered a song in order to mimic the original and it's not to be expected, but gives them another dimension.

Almost everytime worked: Phantom at the opera, Over the hills, Walking in the air - many still thing those are her songs :)

  • @reafras

So the feeling should be in the voice to penetrate, not in the attitude.

I did not want to talk about attitude because it's superficial - but you know well that Anette is criticised also for her "poppish" / "emo" way of being and dressing.

So: no beauty in the voice, no feeling in the voice, no attitude. It eludes me what can be seen in Anette, I just think that people bring the "feeling" argument to excuse her many defects.

  • @reafras

At the end, it's you who looses. Seriosly you cannot hope to attain the same level of .. well, pleasure.. when you hear Anette, than when hearing a beautiful, unique and lyrical voice like Tarja's.

That's what true lyricism is (not talking about 'lyrical soprano' classification, that's another business).

It's hearing a perfect voice and a beautiful interpretation, but THAT VOICE to express the sentiment.

This is how it reaches the soul. At least my soul.. what can I say.

  • @reafras

Vibrato is a natural pitch variation in the voice. Even we are using it, while speaking, also Anette does while "singing". Problem is that it sounds bad by nature and it's uncontrolled.

People in the business and public opinion alike (several millions of die hard fans, media, reviewers etc) consider Tarja one of the best talents and also one of the most skilled singers.

They say her vibrato is stellar, I think that also.. you may not like it but you are an exception.

  • @12321marianne I didn't say that you were right about anette's talent or skills.

considering that you actually used "agitation" .. it's simply how you see her, not how she is. agitating is what the singers i talked about do when they are unabled to feel the emotions to interpret the songs... anette is alive for each second on their concerts

and no. still your opinions are subjective. creativity with balance is the most important for nightwish's genre.

  • @reafras

First of all nobody is bitching about anything. I made a statement and enforced it with arguments. If there is someone bitching here it surely is not me.

Second, "she sings badly but with passion" can be said about any bad singer, isn't it?

Where do you feel emotion, in the way she is agitating herself on stage? It surely is not present in her voice.

Art is a human activity that affects emotions by using skill and virtuosity.

No virtuosity mean NO art, it's bread and circus.

  • @12321marianne

I think they considered it while taking her you know..they are musicians. there isn't a singer that could sing full of life while focusing on her skills for singing "right". let's say many singers simply stop their emotions for being able to focus on technical details and for creative music doing that makes them nothing more than a construction worker. Instead of "your ears" try listening with open mind so you won't be bothering yourself with bitching on it.
