Globalization is the process in which products are being made, sold, and distributed faster and more efficiently, while linking nations and cultures around the world. After the Industrial Revolution, the clothing industry became the fashion industry. Over time fashion became more readily available to more people, and in the twentieth century fast fashion was evident. Fashion trends changed every few years as opposed to every century, and today new trends appear continuously. This continuous change is known as fast fashion. Today companies can produce new clothing designs and have them on the racks in less than five weeks (Ghemawat).
Most people do not realize how much clothing they actually go through. The Environmental Protection Agency reported that the average American throws away around 68 pounds of clothing every year (Alternet). Many people do, however, give their old clothes to Goodwill or other organizations to be reused instead of thrown away. Many companies are taking steps to become more green with biodegradable bags, fabrics, and packaging.
The globalization of fashion has both positive and negative effects on global economies. A positive aspect is more jobs in developing countries. Prevalent negative effects are sweatshops and a loss of American jobs.
Planet Aid is an organization that keeps clothes out of landfills by re-selling them. The profits go to HIV and AIDS prevention, schools, and health programs (planetaid.org). As consumers, we can help by donating clothing to be reused, supporting companies like TOMS Shoes, and monitoring where our clothes come from (TOMSshoes.com). Researching the origins of your clothes can help prevent child labor and sweatshop employment around the world (greenamericatoday.org).
