I saw it in the theatre when it came out, and it was always like that. I think you're right about the purpose.

On another note, you don't know how much that women looks and sound like my aunt Barbra, who was from Alabama, but who has lived in Georgia with her family my whole life. Every summer my dad would take off work for two weeks and we'd drive down south to visit both sides of the family, including stopping off in Georgia to see his sister.

I think Spike Lee purposely made the screen look wierd like that.  To show that they were in a different enviroment than they were uset to.
