Mother Black Bear Nursing Four Cubs

This is Tripawed nursing her four cubs. This purring noise is made by Black Bear cubs to encourage their mothers to 'let down' their milk. Tripawed, who is missing her front right leg, has been a regular visitor at our ranch since 1995 and has mothered a total of 18 cubs in that time. Her color is described as cinnamon and most of her cubs have been various shades of brown, ranging from light blonde to dark chocolate. Black bears have cubs every other year. Since 1995, Tripawed has had two litters of two, two litters of three and two litters of four. We are waiting hopefully to see her return with her yearling cubs in May 2008.
