What's the difference between ESX and ESXi?
If a virtual machines created by the ESXi can directly use the underlying hardware (disk, CPU, memory) without any abstraction, how can you move the vmware file to another system with different disks subsystem like IDE controller to SAS controller?

ESXi is the latest version of ESX. ESXi can be licensed up to include all the additional features VMware has today.
VMware files are like any other file. They can copied to any other system because they are not tied to specific hardware.

When Vmware announced ESXi is free, I was looking for a white paper that clearly spelled out the difference between ESX and ESXi. I am yet to find one. ESX is Vmware's cash crop. what did they removed/restricted in the free ESXi version?
Also it seems hypervisor provides the hardware abstraction to each virtual machines. Then how is that different from say Vmware server that runs on top of an OS. VM->Vmware Server->WindowsOS->hardware control vs VM->ESXi->hardware control?

In my mind, 3i is really the next progression in virtualization options. It is thinner, it installs quicker, and boots faster than ESX 3.x. In theory, it should be more efficient and put less load on the server. Still, it can perform all the same enterprise features that ESX 3.x can. Additionally, you can get it installed on a new server or you can install it on an existing server. Running on top of an OS is never a good idea unless its a necessity.
