I guess your Openshot crashes because it misses some codecs (Preferences-Formats-Reload codecs). It happened to me. Now works fine. BTW, you're doing a great work!

I won't lie to you. The I use Sony Vegas in Windows. My windows partition has 3 programs on it. Vegas, Acid, and Reason. That's all I use it for though. Video editing is really one of the only areas linux is still lagging behind terribly. (I feel dirty and ashamed of myself, but you gotta use the tools that work.
