i think aden and nicole should have told roman they were in bed together when he walked in on them- i know it was a horrible situation, but there's something really wrong about using someones blindness to your advantage.

I reckon roman's mental block relates to his time in Afghanistan, the stone hitting the windscreen created a flashback to being shot at, his brain shut down the sight section because he hadn't dealt with it the first time around after returning from that.
