My band: http://www.myspace.com/ivanrest

- This is a tutorial to help drummers play the polyrhythm that Danny Carey plays at 6:35 on Eulogy...not the rest of the song.

- Drum Set info is in channel profile

*WARNING* - this song's lyrics are fringing on blasphemous. Please be aware and do not play with fire by internalizing them.

- No, I am not Danny Carey and am not even pretending to be him. I can't even touch most of his other songs...

- I am sorry for the strobe lights. It doesn't give me a headache, though.

- By request: for higher quality version, download the video at http://www.megaupload.com/?d=05TKNL54, you should notice a big difference

***Clarification: It takes 3 measures for the pattern to come full circle. It helps to write the whole pattern out on your own sheet of paper. To see this or for questions about what Danny is actually playing, Modern Drummer transcribed the whole pattern here:

- Enjoy!

****************** UPDATE ******************
Let's review the past 150,000 views so we don't have to keep treading the same water:

CLAIM: The song is about L Ron Hubbard (the founder of Scientology).
WildBill: Maybe. This view can be supported by an interview with Danny Carey and other overt references to L Ron Hubbard in the song Aenima. This makes sense because LRH is dead, and this song is intended to be Tool's eulogy for him.

CLAIM: This song is about Bill Hicks.
WildBill: Maybe. It is possible because the Ænima artwork shows a dedication to satirist Bill Hicks, "another dead hero." The band intended to raise awareness about Hicks's material and ideas, because they felt that Tool and Hicks "were resonating similar concepts." This wouldn't be the first time Maynard criticized people he loved (like his mother in APC's Judith).

CLAIM: This song is symbolic for any figure or leader who appeals to the weak masses and leads them like sheep (Hitler, Mussolini, any proclaimed messiah, etc).
WildBill: This is certainly a tenable position. Everyone is entitled to their interpretation of the song.

CLAIM: This song is about Jesus.
WildBill: No. While Eulogy may not be about Jesus specifically, the song does reference Jesus' death negatively. Maynard seems to be making a mockery of Christianity by implying that fools get nailed to crosses. If L Ron Hubbard is the next fool martyr, who was the previous one?

Of course, Maynard never mentions Jesus specifically. But if you doubt Maynard's hostility toward Christianity, please refer to Sober (getting drunk on Jesus' blood), Judith from APC (Maynard curses Jesus and his mother's faith), Rev 22:20 from Puscifer, Opiate, Prison Sex, H, Right in Two, or Wings for Marie and it is nothing short of OBVIOUS that Maynard is opposed to Biblical Christianity.

CLAIM: Stick to your instrument and stop telling me how to live my life.
WildBill: Ok, I could do that, but music is dull in the absence of meaningful lyrics. Although I love Tool's music, I don't agree with a lot of their lyrical content. They are fun to analyze, but Eulogy is particularly irreverent so I just want to remind people that ideas have consequences. If anyone disagrees, definitely send me a message.

CLAIM: It's not blasphemy!
Dictionary: impious utterance or action concerning God or sacred things.
OR
irreverent behavior toward anything held sacred, priceless

CLAIM: But millions of people have died on crosses!
WildBill: When I hear the words "cross, nail, martyr, ascend, crucified, and sins," the first name that pops into my head is Jesus. If this is unreasonable, please call me on it. Once again, I use context clues from Maynard's other lyrics to come to this conclusion.

  • @willingtotry Ha, yes...it would be a nice addition to the collection but there are other things on the shopping list right now...haha.

  • @wildbill1240 That $2700.00 Sonor Artist bronze snare is incredible.

  • @sparkles67 I know...it's tricky. Just keep trying and don't give up! Remember, slow it down. Add one arm or leg at a time. It'll get in your head and eventually your brain will be obeyed by your limbs :)

  • @Percussionoholic Thank you very much. I'm glad you enjoyed my attempt at it. There's still nothing like the feel that Danny adds to it...

  • @rickitickidicki haha, good point!
