OpenGL is just a method for communicating with a graphics card. It isn't outdated or ugly. Rage uses OpenGL 4.2 which just came out this August.

It isn't as easy to use as Direct3D, but it still dominates all non-gaming fields (like CAD) and is the standard for 3D on Linux, Mac, Android, and iOS.

It uses the same hardware it can fully do the same, there is not a single feature or quality OpenGL can't match.

plus OpenGL makes cross-platform games run better on the PC because OpenGL is actually more optimized on Windows (from nvidia/AMD).

so once the PS4 is out, the PC will benefit but the xbox720 will not.

and OpenGL/OpenCL code scale better than directX, and can make better use of the GPU than DirectX will ever be able to do (more low-level access)
