Philippine sea gypsies' way of life under threat - 13 Dec 08

The traditional way of life of Philippine sea gypsies, known locally as the Badjao, is facing a new threat.

Having already fled separatist conflict in the south, many are now confronting eviction from their homes, to make way for new waterfront housing.

Supporters of the development say the move will help the sea gypsies, while opponents say it's just an excuse for developers to make a profit.

the badjao tribe should be preserved, however.... they need to be educated in preserving the sea as well. Badjao tribe is a bit harsh on the marine ecosystem. they harvest corals and marine life essential to keep the sea healthy. they need to learn how to live in harmony with the environment. I just hope the Philippine Government do something about it...
